Basically the cordless phone is an amalgam of the telephone and the radio (transmitter as well as receiver). The cordless phone comprises of two things – the base and the handset. The base is attached to the main phone connection with the help of a jack. It accepts the calls coming in through the line of the phone and then converts it into a FM radio signal. After having done so, it transmits that signal.

The handset gets this radio message from the base and changes it to an electric signal. The latter is then converted to sound and eureka! One can hear! While talking, the handset sends the voice through a second FM radio signal back to the base. The latter receives it, changes it to an electrical signal and then transmits the signal through the lines to the other person at the other end of the line. Thus the base and the handset work on a pair of frequencies that allow for talking and listening at the same time. It is technically known as duplex frequency.

Cordless phones made its first entry in 1980 but their range was limited, sound quality was poor because walls and other objects acted as obstructions. There was little security as the signals could easily be intercepted. In 1986 with the granting of a higher frequency range by the relevant authorities the interference problem of the cordless phones decreased and the amount of power required to run these also lessened. But nevertheless the range was limited and the sound quality remained poor. With the further increase of frequency to 900 MHz in 1990 the sound reception improved, became clearer and longer distances came to be covered with a choice of channels. But the price remained beyond the reach of the common man.

In 1994 digital phones came to be introduced. It made conversations less exposed to eavesdropping. In the following year further advancement in technology in the form of digital spread spectrum was introduced in cordless phones and in this way the march of technology continued to make the cordless phone into a marvel and miracle with greater range, security and clarity of sound.

The cordless phone being a combination of the ordinary telephone and the radio has certain distinctive features that the general phone does not have. It relates to range, sound quality and security. By range is meant the distance that the handset is kept away from the base. This range can affect the quality of the sound being obstructed by walls and other like items.

Security is a big problem because the radio signals from both the handset and the receiver travel across open air paths where they can be easily picked up by other instruments like similar cordless phones, radio scanners or baby monitors.

Connected with the performance of the cordless phones are radio frequency, analog in comparison with digital technology and the number of the channels. The cordless phones works on many radio frequencies. Analog technology is mostly used in cordless phones in the cheaper models. It is more noisy and less secure. The sophisticated latest models use digital technology. All cordless phones have rechargeable batteries.

The invasion of cell phones however has taken away much of the focus on cordless phones although it still retains its market position.

WHAT IS THE INTENDED USE?

Having a clear understanding on the intended use of your CB radio will begin to highlight the critical features and performance of the unit. Common uses for CB radios include, personal home based hobbyists, vehicle to vehicle communications (typically truckers ) and also business personal communications.

Each of these groups of users require different sets of performance capabilities. Hobbyists may focus on having a wide range of frequencies, truckers usually require a full featured unit while business owners may require a system with limited features but powerful and clear transmission. Understanding what you need your CB radio to do will help you easily create a top ten list of preferred CB radios.

IT IS ALL IN THE ANTENNA

A common misconception is thinking more expensive CB radios deliver more power and therefore a better quality sound. The truth is, all CB radios whether cheap or expensive have exactly the same power output, 4watts. The difference in power or clarity of communications resides predominantly in the antenna. The three things to understand here are; length,location and tuning. Let’s take a look;

Length – Basically, longer the antenna, better the communication. The optimum length is 8½ feet or 102 inches which is ¼ the wavelength. If you intended use means an antenna this length is not practical (mounted on a vehicle) consider a coil based antenna. Coil based antennas will have the length of wire which forms the antenna, coiled at its base making it more practical to handle. Handheld units will obviously use a small antenna, usually only 8 inches however, you should look to upgrade the antenna with a booster unit

Location – Higher the antenna, better the communication. In essence try to avoid having any part of your vehicle or building blocking the antenna. Many land based antenna are mounted on high poles and secured with guy wires for stability while vehicle mounted units are usually located on the roof or hood.

Tuning – Ideally the antenna and radio unit should be the same brand to minimize compatibility issues. Be sure to have the antenna correctly tuned to the radio unit.
GIVE YOUR ANTENNA QUALITY TRANSMISSION

A common overlooked element is the quality of the microphone. There is no point having a fantastic antenna if you can’t deliver clear signals to the base unit in the first place. You will be amazed at the difference in clarity when a good microphone is matched with a good antenna. This factor may critical if you are using your radio to transmit important instruction on a regular basis.

BELLS AND WHISTLES

The list of features are extensive. Your intended use will help guide you here. For example, an important feature in a vehicle installed radio may be a ‘Noise Blanker or Automatic Noise Limiter. This will reduce or remove static noise when 12 volt accessories are used in your cigarette lighter outlet. For marine or outdoor situations water proofing is critical. Back lighting functions will be important for business uses such as security.

Deciding on which CB radio to buy should not be a nightmare. Just stick to the basics mentioned above and you will be fine.

The tradition spectrum analyzers are very large and bulky. They are used by large cable corporations when they install a new cable network in the area. These analyzers can be used to detect the spectrum frequency and tune the network accordingly. This is true when you are at the initial stages of installing a network.

Now when the network has to be tuned at the last stage of the installation in an office of home then these bulky spectrum analyzers just cannot work. There is then the need for much better alternatives which the installation engineer can take with him into the home where he is installing the cable.

This is done with the help of the handheld spectrum analyzers. These handheld ones are of course not that accurate as the stationary ones. However these are needed to accurately predict the network availability in the case of the installation at home and offices.

There are a large number of companies that manufactures these and these companies also give on lease or rent. There are various ways that they rent beginning from weekly basis to a monthly basis.

With most of the beard trimmers you will get a length selector. This is used to control the length that you desire. This is very useful and adds that extra control that you need. This open up room for experimentation, maybe you can even find a new look. I myself have discovered total new looks by accident.

The best thing is that using these trimmers is very fast. This enables you to use it often and keep your style neat. This is not a must of course I trim allot less than that but it is nice o know. Because of the increase in popularity of these amazing little machines the price has rapidly been decreasing and the amount of brands has increased. This is good. More competition means better quality products, better customer service and lower price.

With the range being so big is to best to buy these beard trimmers online. It is much easier to see a wider variety and different brands. It is hard to select the right one so I recommend that you set your budget before you even look at these trimmers. This will make the decisions later much easier.

I had recently seen or read positive comments (great picture/inexpensive) about the Dynex flat panel TV and decided to investigate further.

Before I started digging into who makes Dynex TV’s I wanted to find out what “inexpensive” meant in the world of flat screen TV’s. As it turned out, “inexpensive” meant $499 for a 42″ LCD TV from Dynex which was $130 less than a similar size Sony and $170 less than the Panasonic.

The next thing I did was read the reviews. I’ll usually read a couple of the good reviews first, and then head directly to the one and two star reviews to look for potential problems. The only complaint of note was that the sound system wasn’t as robust as it could have been but you can fix that by adjusting the audio equalizer from the remote.

Now, back to “Who makes Dynex TV’s?” After a little more research I discovered that Dynex is the house brand for Best Buy. Along with SEC, Audiovox, and Sanyo, Dynex is manufactured by the Xiamen Overseas Chinese Electronics Company or XOCECO for short. Not that it really makes any difference. I don’t think anybody really knows where anything is made anymore except to say “somewhere in China.”

One thing I didn’t check on, because as a non-tech it never occurred to me, was whether or not the Dynex would be compatible with our existing array of electronic devices. My assumption proved correct and indeed it had all the inputs for game consoles, DVD players, head phones, etc. that we needed. I can even use the screen as a monitor for my computer.

The only remaining test was to view the picture for ourselves; so off we went to Best Buy to take a look. To tell you the truth, neither my wife nor I could discern a difference in picture quality from one make to the next. And the picture on the Dynex actually looked better than those on more expensive models purchased by our friends a year or two ago.

Once we got it home it was a simple matter of connecting the HDMI cord to the cable box and plugging the TV into the outlet. (Actually, all your electronic gizmos, including the TV, should be plugged into a surge protector which in turn is plugged into the outlet.)

My wife couldn’t be happier with her new Hi-Def wide screen TV, and I appreciate all the same bells and whistles found on more expensive brands.
